Philadelphia Pregnant Woman Fatally Shot While Unloading Baby Shower Gifts

Philadelphia Police say a 7-month-pregnant woman was fatally shot

Philadelphia Police say a 7-month-pregnant woman was fatally shot in the head and stomach after attending her baby shower party Saturday night.

According to CNN affiliate KYW, the woman was unloading the gifts from her car when she was shot.

The Philadelphia Police Department said in a statement that the 32-year-old woman was shot around 8:35 p.m., in the 6200 block of Palmetto Street.

Officers took her to the Einstein Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m. and her unborn child was pronounced dead about 10 minutes later, police said.

Police Deputy Commissioner Christine Coulter told KYW that the pregnant woman was carrying gifts from the baby shower when she was shot.

“There was an officer a couple of blocks away who heard the shots. When they arrived, they discovered that he had been shot multiple times,” Coulter said. “The person who did this couldn’t be more of a coward.”

So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the Saturday night shooting and no weapons have been recovered, the Police Department said in its statement.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted Sunday that the city is offering a $ 50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

“This news is deeply disturbing and heartbreaking. My heart goes out to the victim’s loved ones during this painful time,” wrote Kenney.

Speaking to KYW about gun violence in the city, Coulter said there is more to do.

“We are doing everything we can, we have a record number of guns off the streets, but we are always looking to do more,” he said. “We need everyone in the city, including elected officials, police officers, and everyone who lives in every home in Philadelphia, to be as angry as possible about this.”
